Monday 16th October

  • The Prime Minister updated the House of Commons on the situation in Israel and Palestine. I asked the Prime Minister to make sure that the UK Government’s aid response centres an atrocity prevention framework to ensure staff are trained in responding to and preventing atrocities.
  • I also asked the Justice Secretary to amend the Victims Bill to ensure statutory defences for victims of domestic violence, stopping more unjust convictions of women criminalised as a result of their abuse.

Tuesday 17th October

  • I received an updated briefing from the Foreign Office about the situation in Israel and Palestine and what the Government is doing in response. We need far more aid to be sent to the region and pressure on Israel to allow aid to enter Gaza.
  • I voted in 15 divisions on the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. The Government rejected numerous proposed amendments, including one to ensure local authorities local plans must make provision for sufficient social housing and to eliminate homelessness.

Wednesday 18th October

  • I showed my support for Breast Cancer Now’s Wear it Pink campaign in Parliament, an important fundraising campaign to raise money for research and support for people with breast cancer.
  • Delighted to hear that one of my constituents has been granted Leave to Remain in the UK and can stay living with their family, after waiting more than two years for a decision from the Home Office.
  • I voted to support an amendment of the Energy Bill to ensure that the government would consult and bring forward proposals to remove barriers preventing the development of community energy schemes. Sadly, the Government rejected this amendment.

Thursday 19th October

  • I signed an Early Day Motion agreeing with the UN Secretary General that the collective punishment of the Palestinian people by Israel is unjustifiable and calling for the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary to use their influence to push for a ceasefire.
  • I am still seeing huge numbers of constituents being evicted and made homeless. I was relieved to hear that after my representations Enfield Council temporarily housed one of my constituents after he was street homeless for several days.
  • I also went out campaigning ahead for Labour for the by-elections in Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth, which Labour went onto win, adding on two more MPs to fight for a fairer Britain.

Friday 20th October

  • I continued responding to the huge numbers of correspondence I have received related to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Since the immediate crisis in Israel and Palestine began, I have been contacted by 432 constituents with their concerns as I write this.
  • Overall, I’ve been in contact with 89 constituents this week about individual issues they need assistance with, the most common of which were Home Office delays, especially regarding visa applications.
