Kate Osamor MP Responds to Tory Budget

Kate Osamor, the Labour MP for Edmonton, has spoken out against the Tory

Government’s latest budget. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. George

Osborne delivered the summer budget on the 8th of July 2015. This budget

contained measures such as turning maintenance grants for low income

students into loans, as well as cuts to tax credits and a reduction in the benefits

cap.  The Government also pledged to increase the minimum wage to a

“living wage”. However, the higher wage will still be well below what

independent organisations have calculated as a true living wage and many

families will end up worse off than before because of tax credit cuts.

 Kate Osamor MP said:

“This budget is a further attack on the people of Edmonton. Cuts to tax credits

will see thousands of working families worse off than before. A couple in

full-time work on the minimum wage with two children will gain £1,560 in

salary, but lose over £2,200 from cuts to tax credits. The Chancellor is giving

with one hand while taking more away with the other.”

“This budget is also a huge missed opportunity. We should be building an

economy where people can get high skilled and well paid jobs, by investing in

infrastructure and training. But the Government has dithered over infrastructure

projects and is turning grants for low income students into loans. This will push

young people into more debt and discourage them from getting educated.”
