Kate Osamor, Labour and Co-op MP for Edmonton, has spoken out against the
Government’s education proposals in the House of Commons. She did this
during the Second Reading of the Education and Adoption Bill on Monday the
22nd of June. The Education and Adoption Bill will make it easier for the
Government to turn local government schools deemed as “coasting” into
academies. A high profile committee of MPs recently carried out a study which
did not find evidence that turning schools into academies improved performance.
During her speech Ms. Osamor highlighted that the Government had failed to
define the term “coasting schools” and that the Bill would reduce the ability of
parents and the public to have a say in who runs their schools.
Speaking on the subject Kate Osamor MP said:
"I am very concerned by Tory education plans. There is a total lack of
evidence that acadamisation will deliver the improvements in schools
which we all want to see. At the same time, this Bill would reduce the
voice of communities and parents in the education system. Instead of
pressing ahead with these expensive and unproven proposals, the
Government should be dealing with the real issues in education such
as the shortage of teachers in England.”
