Kate Osamor MP’s statement on the threatened closure of the A&E department of North Middlesex Hospital on safety grounds:
“I was extremely saddened and concerned to hear the news that North Middlesex Hospital A&E unit has been threatened with closure on safety grounds, with both the GMC and Health Education England issuing unprecedented warnings about the department.
It is the first time in the history of the NHS that an A&E unit has been threatened with closure on safety grounds.
I have been raising my concerns about the future of the hospital on the floor of the Chamber in health questions and debates, as well as in private with Health ministers and the hospital leadership.
Just last week, I met Jane Ellison MP and raised my concerns directly with her. I have also written a joint letter with Joan Ryan MP to the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP, calling for him to urgently intervene to ensure that the hospital can fulfil its duty of caring for its patients. We are also calling for the early release of the findings of an inspection of the emergency department undertaken by personnel from the Care Quality Commission watchdog in April.
I put in an urgent question about the future of the A&E department today. I was deeply disappointed that this was not granted. I will continue to raise this issue, which is of serious concern in terms of the safety of my constituents, but is also of wider national concern.
The government are failing our NHS, and more must be done to protect our patients and our doctors.”
