Kate Osamor MP Slams Housing Stats

Kate Osamor MP has condemned figures which show that Edmonton is bearing the brunt of

London’s housing crisis. Statistics obtained by the Local Government Chronicle under Freedom

of Information rules show that the Government’s benefit cap and the shortage of council housing

have resulted in an increase in London councils giving financial assistance to people from central

London to relocate to outer London or from London to other parts of the country. Enfield has

been disproportionately affected, as it is one of only two London boroughs out of the fifteen

respondents in which the population increased as a result of these movements. 277 people moved

into Enfield from other boroughs in 2013-14, pushing up house prices and rents in the area.

Speaking on the subject Kate Osamor MP said:

“Many constituents have got in touch with me about the shortage of adequate and affordable

housing in the area. These figures confirm that Edmonton is being hit hard by London’s housing

crisis. The Tories have failed to build enough council houses and introduced a benefits cap which

is pushing people out of central London to places like Edmonton. This is forcing up rents and house

prices in the area.”

“We urgently need to build more social and genuinely affordable housing in London. I will continue

to campaign to put housing at the top of the agenda in the run up to the mayoral election next year.”
