Kate Osamor MP has spoken of her optimism in the strength of the Labour mass movement after her first party conference as an MP. More than 150,000 people have joined the Labour party since the election defeat; a larger number than the total membership of any other political party in the UK. The party now has more than 350,000 members.
Kate Osamor worked alongside Jeremy Corbyn MP throughout his leadership campaign. She was one of the 35 MPs who got his name onto the ballot and she worked with him on his ‘Working with Women’ policy document. Jeremy Corbyn, a long serving backbencher and fellow North London MP, was seen as the outsider in the leadership race, however he won with an overwhelming 59.5% of the votes. She has recently been appointed his shadow Parliamentary Private Secretary, a role that she will share with Steve Rotheram MP.
Speaking on the subject, Kate says:
“For the first time in a long time people seem really engaged in politics. Labour under Jeremy has broken British political apathy and given people hope.
People, young people especially, are starting to believe there is a better type of politics and that we don’t have to accept austerity. We have risen up after the election defeat and built a mass movement. It’s so exciting.”
