Over the past few months I, like the majority of my Labour colleagues, sought to set out a positive case for the UK remaining a member of the European Union. However, as you know, the majority of people who participated in the referendum on June 23rd voted for the UK to leave the EU.

I know that many people are disappointed with the outcome of the referendum, and I am aware of a number of campaigns expressing support for continued membership of the EU. I am also aware of calls for there to be a second referendum, and a related petition has received a considerable number of signatures.

Our economy is now fragile and I recognise the risks posed to the UK economy following the decision to leave the EU. I am also concerned by the apparent lack of planning by the Government for the result of the referendum across all policy areas. It is important that the Government now facilitate as positive a transition as possible, bringing forward measures to reduce volatility and provide protections for people's jobs, wages and pensions.

I know that there is particular concern over the legal status of EU nationals currently residing in the UK, and of UK nationals residing in other EU countries. I believe it is vital that EU citizens currently living or working in the UK have their residency rights protected, and likewise for UK citizens currently living or working in the EU. Labour acted to seek assurances on this issue, with the Home Secretary tabling a motion on EU citizen's right to remain. It was passed by 254 to 2, with the government abstaining on the vote.

EU citizens' right to remain is one of a number of red lines that the Opposition has already set out in regard to the UK-EU negotiation. The Opposition are also demanding that existing protections at work provided by the EU are maintained, and that freedom of trade for UK businesses in the EU, and vice versa, is secured.

In the weeks and months ahead it will be the vital role of the Opposition to engage in the negotiations and scrutinise the Government.  Labour will oppose a deal that will jeopardise British people's jobs and living conditions.

This is a matter of national interest and I can assure you that I will be following developments very closely.
