Poppies in a French Field
Poppies in a French Field

This Remembrance Sunday we remember those who have died because of conflict and war.  It is 100 years since the devastation of the First World War, during which 20 million civilians and soldiers lost their lives.  We remember the extraordinary struggles of the elderly, of women and children, forced to work in the mines, in the fields and in the factories, taking the place of the men departing for the frontlines.  We remember the British military personnel and the hundreds of thousands of Dominion and Commonwealth soldiers who have fought and died side by side in the many past and current conflicts and wars.

In remembering, we renew our resolve to work for peace.  We seek for a world without conflict.  We are especially mindful that in today’s wars over 90% of people killed are civilians.  On Remembrance Sunday I will join the Edmonton Remembrance Day Parade, which starts behind Edmonton Green and marches to the war memorial site.  I will be laying a wreath in hope that one day we will be able to say, finally, “never again”.
