Monday 11th December

  • This week I signed a letter to the Foreign Secretary, along with 56 of my colleges in Parliament, calling on the Government to ban violent settlers in the West Bank from entering the UK. Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank has brought with it settlers, who frequently take part in violent attacks against the Palestinian population. The key to long-term peace in the region is ending illegal settlements and the occupation entirely.

  • I was contacted by my constituent, who was a Council Tenant and had been without water for some time, despite currently undergoing cancer treatment. After making representations on his behalf the Council was able to restore hot water to the property.

Tuesday 12th December

  • On Tuesday I voted against the Government’s latest Rwanda Bill. The Bill is immoral, unworkable and illegal under international law. Rwanda is not a safe country to safe refugees. That’s why our own Supreme Court determined that the scheme was previously unlawful. Now the Government wants to pass this Bill to say that Rwanda is safe, overriding our international obligations at the same time.

  • On Tuesday I took part in an important debate in Parliament on the issue of weapon sales to Israel. The Government continues to allow weapon sales to Israel, even though those weapons are being used to commit war crimes. The Government says that it has strict regulations that prevent arms from being used to commit atrocities, but this is not a regulatory regime that is working. We must end the sale of weapons to Israel immediately. Until that happens the Government will continue to be complicit in the Gazan genocide.

Wednesday 13th December

  • On Wednesday I voted against the Government’s amendment to the Representation of the People Act 1985. The Amendment removes the 15-year limit on voting for British Citizens overseas, allowing registration based on both previous registration and previous residence in the UK. In effect, it means that millionaires and billionaires who do not live and have never lived in the UK to avoid tax will now be able to vote in our elections.

  • Following a statement by the Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs in Parliament I took the opportunity to ask about my constituent’s terrible situation, in which he is yet to be reunited with his family despite having fled Afghanistan more than 2 years ago. My constituent, who assisted the UK Army while in Afghanistan, should have been assisted by the Home Office’s Afghanistan resettlement scheme, but the scheme has completely failed Afghan citizens who put their lives on the line to help our soldiers.

  • I also attended the important Guide Dogs Christmas event, a brilliant event to mark the achievements this year in improve accessibility. From the requirement for audio-visual announcements on buses to more funding for tactile warning paving on railway platforms, a lot of progress has been made, but a lot more remains to be done. As always, I’m sure that the brilliant Guide Dogs charity will be at the centre of any progress made in the future.

Thursday 14th December

  • This week L&Q Housing Association finally fixed my constituent’s heating and hot water, which had been out of service for more than 7 weeks. That is an unacceptably long wait, especially during the winter.

  • In another L&Q case, after I made representations on my constituent’s behalf, the Housing Association agreed to a substantial increase in compensation following a failure to acknowledge my constituent’s vulnerabilities when attempting to recover rent arrears.

Friday 15th December

  • This week I was contacted by more than 400 people, with the majority of people contacting me asking me to speak out against the government’s Arms Trade with Israel. I did that by signing Early Day Motion 177 which called for an end to that trade as well as speaking in the Parliamentary debate on the subject.

  • This week, Enfield Council agreed to extend the hotel booking for my constituent to prevent the family from being made street homeless. The Housing and Homelessness crisis is only getting worse and it’s important that everything possible is done to respond to this crisis by both national and local governments.
