I was extremely saddened and concerned to hear the news that North Middlesex Hospital A&E unit has been threatened with closure on safety grounds, with both the GMC and Health Education England issuing unprecedented warnings about the department. It is the first time in the history of the NHS that an A&E unit has been threatened with closure on safety grounds. I have been raising my concerns about the future of the hospital on the floor of the Chamber in health questions and debates, as well as in private with Health ministers and the hospital leadership. I met Jane Ellison and raised my concerns directly with her. I have also written a joint letter with Joan Ryan MP to the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP, calling for him to urgently intervene to ensure that the hospital can fulfil its duty of caring for its patients. Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published their latest report into findings of urgent and emergency care services at North Middlesex University Hospital, which has been rated as Inadequate. Immediate concerns were raised and a Warning Notice issued following the inspection. The rating of Inadequate that urgent and emergency care services at North Middlesex university hospital has received from the Care Quality Commission verifies longstanding concerns about the quality of care at the hospital, which have been ignored for too long by the central government. It is the first time in the history of the NHS that an A&E unit has been threatened with closure on safety grounds. Urgent intervention is necessary to ensure that the urgent and emergency care services remain open and that the quality of care improves to meet the needs of patients. I have been in regular contact with the management of North Middlesex University Hospital about this issue and have also raised my concerns directly with Health ministers. All local Labour MPs have been and are working closely together on this issue, and I will be hosting a public meeting on Monday 25 July 7 – 8.30pm at Green Towers Community Centre, Plevna Road, London, N9 0BT to discuss responses to this crisis and how best to save our A&E.
