My Week Representing Edmonton

Monday 2nd October

  • Following the tragic murder of 16-year-old Taye Faik on Sunday night, I attended a meeting with the Police on Monday to be fully briefed on the work they are doing to bring perpetrators of this awful crime to Justice. If anybody has information that they think might be relevant to the investigation they should call 101 using the referencing number 7767/01oct.

  • The DWP reinstated my constituents Universal Credit, after an incorrect decision that they were not habitually resident. In addition, they were also paid compensation for the errors made and an incorrect overpayment was written off.

Tuesday 3rd October

  • On Tuesday I attended a roundtable discussion with young people who are part of youth initiatives at Millfield theatre. It was inspiring to hear about the difference that the Platinum Academy of Performing Arts has made to their lives. It’s vital that we invest in our young people so that we can give every young person the chance of succeeding.

  • Following investigations, the Home Office confirmed that my constituent should not be delayed or stopped at the UK border moving forward, having repeatedly harassed my constituent in the past.

Wednesday 4th October

  • I spoke at a ‘Celebrating our sisters’ event organised by the Co-Operative Party to celebrate Black History Month. It was a privilege to the share the platform with a number of Councillors from across the country and highlight the incredible achievements and leadership of Black women who have played pivotal roles in shaping history, inspiring change and building strong communities.

  • Many constituents wrote to me this week calling on the Chancellor to use the upcoming Autumn standard to close the funding gap for local authorities. Over the past 13 years the Tories have cut Local Authority funding by billions, forcing Councils to make cuts to vital services in turn. These cuts need to be reversed are a matter of priority.

  • On Wednesday I also spoke at the final Enfield Southgate CLP BAME forum with Chair of the Labour Party, Anneliese Dodds. It was great to speak to such a motivated groups of members who have been doing great work both in their party and across the local community.

Thursday 5th October

  • Dozens of constituents wrote to me this week calling on the Government to protect the triple lock, after reports in the media that the Conservatives are considering dropping it. The triple lock is a guarantee that the state pension rises each year in line with whichever is the highest; wages, inflation or 2.5%. I’m clear that the Government should not drop the triple lock, our state pension is already low by international standards. We must do more to lift pensioners out of poverty.

  • L&Q Housing Association have committed to tackling the pest issue and Anti-Social Behaviour problem at Brickland Court. I will be monitoring this situation closely and will hold L&Q to account if there is no improvement.

Friday 6th October

  • This week more than 70 constituents contacted me, with the most common issue being homelessness and housing disrepair. A lot of constituents also contacted me asking me to push the Government to prioritise issues like the climate crisis and cost-of-living crisis.

  • Over the last week a lot of constituents wrote to me objecting to reports that the Government might cut benefits further. I’m absolutely opposed to any such cuts. In and out of work benefits are already far too low and not enough to lift anybody out of poverty. Cutting them further to pay for tax cuts for the rich would be incredible cruel and economically illiterate.
