Like all those who campaigned for and voted Remain, I am disappointed by the referendum result. The result has shocked Britain. In my opinion, a vote for Leave was, amongst other things, a protest vote against the establishment. But it was a vote against the wrong Establishment. It is Tory policy, going back to Thatcher, that is responsible for wide inequality in our country and the underfunding of certain areas of Britain. Now, as Her Majesty’s Official Opposition, we must be working to ensure that Britain outside the EU continues to be a progressive and inclusive country that works in the interests of the many, not the few. In particular, I am concerned by the rise in hate crime fuelled by the EU referendum, with the Muslim Council of Britain recording over 100 hate incidents since the EU referendum. I am saddened for the 75% of young people who voted remain in this referendum and do not feel that their voices were heard. I hope that this referendum does not dissuade them from voting in the future, and I hope it will encourage rather than deter youth participation in politics. I am, however, encouraged by the large turnout in the referendum. If this referendum has taught us anything, I hope it has taught us not to underestimate the power of the ballot box. Going forward, we must engage with people across the country and across all age groups to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.
