Monday 3rd July

  • On Monday I supported Labour’s reasoned amendment on the Economic Activity of Public Bodies Bill that would have allowed public bodies, like Local Authorities to choose not to buy goods or services from countries based on their human rights record. The Government voted the amendment down.
  • A number of constituents wrote to me asking me to sign the Energy For All Manifesto from Fuel Poverty Action which calls for the current pricing structures for gas, electricity, oil and heat to be radically overhaul. I support the aims of this campaign and would like to see our energy sector brought back into public ownership so that we can run it for people and not profit. Energy is a human right that everybody should have access to no matter their circumstances.

Tuesday 4th July

  • Following representations on behalf of my constituent their landlord South Housing finally agreed to instruct contractors to find a permanent solution to the disrepair at the property, including replacing windows, doors and the roof.
  • Many constituents wrote to me about continued delay of the Renters Reform Bill. It’s been more than 6 years since the Tories promised to ban no-fault evictions and its unacceptable that they’ve still failed to do so. With the renting crisis only getting worse, getting this Bill through parliament should be one of the Governments top priorities. Labour supports the Bill and will help the Government to improve it and pass it as soon as they put it before us.

Wednesday 5th July

  • On Wednesday I secured an important Westminster Hall debate on the criminalisation of victims of violence against women from ethnic minority and migrant communities. It’s a sad fact that in our criminal justice system ethnic minority and migrant women who report domestic violence all too often find themselves facing unjust criminal proceedings.
  • Enfield Council agreed to clear my constituents Council Tax arrears following representations which I made. I’m concerned with the speed with which the Council is passing Council Tax debt onto debt collectors, and this is something that I will continue to push Enfield Council to do better on.

Thursday 6th July

  • I wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport to raise my objections and concerns about plans to close Railway ticket offices across the country. Such plans discriminate against vulnerable and disabled people who still often rely on ticket offices.
  • Dozens of constituents wrote to me about the risk that deep sea mining will be approved by governments at the meeting of the UN International Seabed Authority this year. I’m clear that I oppose this practice as is irreparably damages delicate ecosystems which are vital to life on this planet.

Friday 7th July

  • 245 constituents contacted me this week. The most common issue was housing, and the second most common issue were delays with asylum and citizenship applications.
  • This week I again had a number of L&Q Housing Association tenants with severe disrepair issues which have been repeatedly ignored for months by L&Q. This is a worrying trends, L&Q has a duty of care to its tenants which it is failing to meet.
