Kate Osamor MP – Weekly Diary

Monday 24th July 2023

  • Following representations, Enfield Council are conducting remedial works to the roof at Gilpin Court with work expected to be completed by the end of July.

  • A number of constituents wrote to me about the fact that the basic rate of Universal Credit isn’t enough to lift people out of poverty. In the UK we have one of the lowest benefit rates in Europe. It isn’t fit for purpose, and I would support a significant increase in Universal Credit rates so that we can reduce all forms of poverty, increase economic growth and reduce wasteful spending on other public services.

Tuesday 25th July 2023

  • Enfield Council reinstated my constituents Housing Benefit and made payments to her landlord.

  • Jointly with Enfield Climate Action Forum I have begun to write to schools across Edmonton asking them if they would like to have an air pollution monitor at or outside their school. This presents an opportunity to get students involved in an important local issue and with Enfield having one of the fewest numbers of air pollution monitors of any London Borough we really need to boost that number.

Wednesday 26th July 2023

  • Enfield Council begun repairs to a constituent’s property after a long running issue with leaks and other forms of disrepair.

  • Several constituents wrote to me about a petition signed by more than 20,000 self-employed workers for the HMRC to stop finding self-employed individuals who are under the threshold to be taxed but have returned their self-assessment forms late. I support such a change.

Thursday 27th July 2023

  • I wrote to the Leader of Enfield Council to express my concern about plans to cut Council Tax Support. While I understand that Tory cuts are forcing Councils across the country to make difficult decisions its essential that vulnerable people are not forced into Council Tax arrears.

  • I wrote to the Head of Housing at Enfield Council about my concerns regarding the way that residents in a Support Housing unit are being treated and the poor levels of communication between those residents and the Housing team at the Council.

Friday 28th July 2023

  • Over the week I was contacted by more than 240 constituents from across Edmonton. Issues raised included the cost-of-living crisis, World Health Organisation, the Housing crisis, and Home Office Delays. My office sent out more than 250 emails in response and as always, everybody who contacts me will be responded to.
