Monday 25 September

  • Several constituents got in touch with me this week to raise their objections to the planned visit of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salmon this autumn. I agree that while its necessary to maintain a dialogue with the government of Saudi Arabia, we must be seen to hold them account for breaches of human rights. We should not roll-out the red-carpet for a leader who has blood on their hands.
  • My constituent confirmed that their landlord finally attended their property to repair their boiler. It’s unacceptable that so many Landlords in the private rented sector fail to maintain minimum standards of safety and security in their properties. Renters need more rights and the ability to enforce them so we can hold rogue landlords to account.

  • This week a lot of you contacted me about in opposition to a possible ban on vaping. I agree that its important to recognise the role that vaping has played in millions of people quitting smoking. However, I also have serious concerns about the way in which vaping companies market their products towards children. We should take a pragmatic and proportionate approach to this issue focused on regulating an addictive and dangerous product.
  • My constituent had confirmed that a dome hawk camera has been installed near Craig Park to deter anti-social behaviour.

Wednesday 27 September

  • Constituents contacted me this week about the Government’s decision to freeze Housing Benefit rates since the Pandemic. Even while rents have continued to rise out of control the Tories have kept Housing Benefit frozen. The result is that ordinary working families are being forced out of their homes, with many becoming homeless or moving up north. This is unacceptable, the Government must unfreeze housing benefit urgently.
  • My constituent was awarded her state pension after a significant delay that had caused her a lot of hardship. This sort of poor practice by the DWP is common and leads to many families needing to use food banks or even being made homeless.

Thursday 28 September

  • Two years ago the Government vowed to protect countless animals with the Kept Animals Bill. Sadly, like so many of their promises, the Government has abandoned this bill. Many constituents wrote to me this week urging the Government to re-introduce this bill. I’ve raised this will the Minister for Animal Welfare previously and will continue to press the Government to get this Bill passed.
  • A number of constituents wrote to me with concerns about the decision by the Council to privatise Millfield Arts Centre. The Council has said that the arts centre will continue to be used as a cultural hub with the library being retained, but perhaps moved on-site. I will be keeping a close eye on developments.

Friday 29 September

  • This week more than 70 constituents contacted me. The most common issues were related to Enfield Council and housing, but I was also contacted about policy issues related to animal welfare and many other important causes.
  • Sadly, even in the middle of a Housing Crisis, there is still no sign that the Government plans to reintroduce the Renters Reform Bill to Parliament. The Bill would ban no-fault evictions, a move that is desperately required. When Parliament returns this is something I will raise with relevant ministers.
