Kate Osamor MP – My Week Representing Edmonton

Monday 28th August

  • A number of constituents wrote to me to raise their concerns about GCSE grading this year. Despite students facing years of disruption as a result of the pandemic the Government failed to take account of how much lost learning this year’s students had going into exams. Devolved Governments in Wales and Scotland took a different, fairer approach. The Tories here should have done the same.
  • After long delays my constituent was moved into alternative asylum accommodation that was more suitable after they were evicted from their previous accommodation.

Tuesday 29th August

  • Student Finance England determined that they had made an error and that my constituent was in fact eligible for Student Finance, following my representations.
  • The Home Office finally issued decisions for two of my constituents following my representations, after months of delays.

Wednesday 30th August

  • Many constituents wrote to me this week to voice their opposition to Government plans to close train ticket offices across the country. This is a move that is clearly opposed by the vast majority of the country, and I couldn’t agree with them more. I’ve written to the Transport Secretary to urge him to reconsider the move, which would be a disaster for disabled, elderly and vulnerable people.
  • After contacting the Home Office they concluded my constituents Modern Day Slavey case and have granted them Leave to Remain.

Thursday 31st August

  • Dozens of constituents continued to write to me this week calling for a ban on electronic ‘shock’ collars. I have called on the Government to introduce such a ban and believe they should go much further to improve Animal Welfare standards in this Country.

  • I’ve urged the Council to approve proposals for a 100% social rent tower block on Fore Street next Tuesday, after previously blocking planning permissions over concerns the tower is ‘ugly’. It would be inexcusable for the Council to reject these plans while continuing to move homeless families hundreds of miles up north or keeping them in hotel rooms for months on end.

Friday 1st September

  • This week 48 constituents emailed me, and my office sent out 136 emails responding on a range of issues including homelessness, home office delays, animal cruelty, planning permission and the refugee crisis.
  • The Metropolitan Police have apologised for staffing issues causing slow progress on my constituent’s case after they confirmed to have finally identified the perpetrator. They are now seeking an expedited arrest.
