Council Must Approve Social Housing Block I am calling on Enfield Council to approve proposals for a 100% social rent tower block on Fore Street. As the plans come up for discussion next Tuesday, I urge our councillors to recognise the homelessness crisis we face and do the right thing. We must prioritise building social homes. Rejecting these plans would be inexcusable, particularly as the Council continues the practice of moving homeless families hundreds of miles to the North of London or placing them in hotel rooms for months on end. The Greater London Authority (GLA) has emphasised the significance of providing affordable homes to address London’s pressing need for such housing. Not only does this initiative respond to that need, but it also aligns with the implementation of the London Plan. Enfield Council has an opportunity to make a difference, to create homes that will have a lasting impact on the lives of our residents. The planning committee’s decision on the 5th of September is incredibly important and I hope that this time they will make the right decision and put residents first. |

ULEZ Expansion: Support Available for Those Affected The week the expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone came into force, creating the worlds biggest clean air zone. The expansion of ULEZ will enable five million more people to breathe cleaner air and is predicted to lower carbon emissions from vehicles in outer London by a substantial 27,000 tonnes. Most importantly of all, it will save hundreds of lives. Although 90% of Londoners won’t be impacted by the expansion, for the 10% that are, support is available. The expanded scrappage scheme offers financial grants to Londoners, businesses, and charities to switch to cleaner vehicles. With millions of pounds still available in the scheme, it’s crucial for all impacted individuals to take advantage of this support. Temporary exemptions have also been extended for disabled individuals and certain groups to provide them with more time to adjust. Additionally, the NHS Reimbursement Scheme ensures that patients who had to pay the ULEZ charge during their medical journey can seek reimbursement. As we move towards a greener and healthier future for London, it’s crucial to make use of the available support, including the scrappage scheme, exemptions, and the NHS Reimbursement Scheme. By working together, we can create a cleaner, safer environment for all Londoners. |

Standing Against the Closure of Train Station Ticket Offices The opposition to the closure of railway ticket offices is gaining momentum, with over 500,000 individuals voicing their concerns against plans to shut ticket counters at 974 railway stations across England. As a Member of Parliament, I have expressed my firm opposition to these closures, writing directly to the Secretary of State for Transport. The closure of ticket offices extends beyond just job loss; it raises concerns about accessibility and inclusivity. Ticket offices and station staff play a crucial role in assisting passengers of various needs, and their presence should not be underestimated. I’m also particularly concerned about the impact on elderly, vulnerable and disabled passengers if these plans go ahead. It’s important that staff are always available at station, as they can make a huge difference to those who rely on them. I’ll continue to voice my opposition to these plans and I’m hopeful that the overwhelming public opposition to them might make the Government think again. The public are tired of seeing private train companies put profit ahead of people. We want a transport network run by and for the public. Ultimately that means bringing the trains back into public ownership, but until that moment the very least we can expect is to have a human available to speak to when we use the station we rely on. |
