Monday 29th May

  • This week Parliament was not sitting, as it was recess. It returns on Monday 5th Monday was a Bank Holiday.

Tuesday 30th May

  • Constituents wrote to me about the rising issue of food poverty and the fact that almost 3 million emergency food parcels were handed out by Trussell Trust Food Banks between April 2022 and March 2023.
  • A number of constituents wrote to me following news that Uganda plans to pass new worrying anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. I back strong action against Uganda if it continues to persecute LGBTQ+ individuals, including a travel ban for Parliamentarians who vote for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

Wednesday 31st May

  • Enfield Council accepted that there had been failings in their assessment of a constituent’s homelessness application and that they failed to prevent homelessness, when they should have.
  • Many constituents wrote to me calling on the Government to get on and give the Renters Reform Bill a second reading. The Bill will ban no-fault evictions, which the Government first promised to do 8 years ago. Landlords can currently use Section 21 notices to evict tenants without giving any reason. The Government needs to urgently ban this practice to help tackle the homelessness crisis.
  • A constituent contacted me about an anti-social behaviour complaint. Following representations I made to the constituents Landlord, that Landlord has now acknowledged that their initial action to address was not sufficient. They have since taken proactive steps to resolve the situation, including meetings those responsible and redesigning the area around the constituent’s property.

Thursday 1st June

  • A disabled constituent who had been placed in unsuitable hotel accommodation for several months was finally offered suitable adapted accommodation.
  • A large number of constituents contacted me this week about Home Office delays. The number of people waiting longer than 6 months for an asylum claim decision has skyrocketed. For many of those waiting, they are banned from both working or claiming benefits and are forced to survive on an allowance of just £8.24 a week.
  • I received several emails from constituents about the Human Rights violations in Pakistan. The Government in Pakistan has been involved in various human rights violations through unlawful detention, torture and suppression of free speech. I’m clear that the UK needs to stand up for human rights in every part of the world.

Friday 2nd June

  • This week I received a total of 161 emails from constituents, on issues as varied as human rights, the cost-of-living crisis to Council Tax and Homelessness.
  • An L&Q tenant contacted me about a serious case of disrepair in which their ceiling collapsed because of a leak. L&Q not to treat the case with the seriousness it deserves but I will make representations on behalf of the constituent until the issue is resolved.
