My Week Representing Edmonton

Monday 12th June

  • As always on Monday morning, my inbox was full of emails from constituents living in unsatisfactory housing including several from constituents concerned about their future as they are being decanted from their homes in Curlew House due to the building’s condition.
  • I responded to emails from constituents making clear I support the Labour Party’s policy to ban new oil and gas licenses after we enter government after the next election and sharing concerns about the Government dumping their bill to ensure a live exports ban.
  • I was pleased to hear that a constituent I have been assisting has been moved out of B&B accommodation with her children and into suitable housing.

Tuesday 13th June

  • I received a response from the Minister for Women and Equalities regarding a letter I wrote on the proposed conversion therapy ban, which I shared with constituents who’ve contacted me about this this. Disappointingly, few assurances were forthcoming from the Minister to confirm there wouldn’t be any loopholes in the legislation.
  • I also made representations on behalf of a number of constituents regarding reports of disrepair and mould that haven’t been dealt with by their landlords.

Wednesday 14th June

  • After being contacted by many people concerned about the prosecution of a woman for terminating her pregnancy after the legal time limit, as well as many of the opposite view. I responded making clear I support the decriminalisation of abortion.
  • I received a response from North Middlesex Hospital to an enquiry about maternity exemption certificates, which provide entitlement to free prescriptions. The hospital has committed to reconsidering their practice to ensure all who are eligible.
  • I was pleased to receive a response from the Home Office who following my intervention granted my constituent permission to work.

Thursday 15th June

  • I was delighted to hear that following my intervention my constituent’s husband has been granted a spousal visa and has been able to flee the terrifying situation in Sudan.
  • I also voiced my support for North London Hospice’s Fund Our Nurses appeal to ensure they have the funding to keep providing a good service in the face of skyrocketing energy prices. Please donate at the link: https://northlondonhospice.org/fund-our-nurses/

Friday 16th June

  • I have added my name as a sign of support to an amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill to ensure authorities take reasonable steps to track name changes of sex offenders and notify the victim/s of any relevant changes.
  • This week I responded to a total of 253 emails from constituents, on a wide range of issues such as Home Office delays, experiences at North Middlesex Hospital and a request to attend a Parliamentary drop-in about arthritis.
