My Week Representing Edmonton –  w/c 19-06-2023

Monday 19th June

  • On Monday I supported a vote to back the Privileges Committee in its conclusions that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson mislead Parliament on several occasions. Johnson has resigned to avoid accountability and the inevitability of contesting and losing a by-election. This was an important vote to show that those in power who lie to parliament will be held to account.

  • After making representations to Enfield Council, the Council finally conceded that my constituent has the right to succeed to his mother’s tenancy. For the first time in years my constituent now has a safe and secure place to live.

Tuesday 20th June

  • Many constituents wrote to me about the anniversary of Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus. I’m absolutely clear that I support international law and human rights under all circumstances and that illegal occupations everywhere around the globe should be brought to a peaceful end.

  • After I made representations on behalf of my constituent the DWP awarded my constituent compensation and apologised for delaying his PIP claim.

Wednesday 21th June

  • As a Labour MP I’m passionate about animal welfare and on Wednesday Labour put forward a motion that would have ensure the Kept Animals Bill was put back before Parliament. The Tories blocked the motion.

  • I gave a speech on the Health and Social Protection of undocumented workers at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe where I called for an end to the hostile environment and better protection for refugees.

  • The Minimum Service Levels Bill returned to the Commons from the Lords. This Tory Bill seeks to restrict the democratic right to strike. I will continue to oppose it at every stage.

Thursday 22th June

  • Along with hundreds of other parliamentarians across the world, I signed a letter sent to the President of FIFA asking FIFA to do more to support the women of Afghanistan who are being prevented from playing football.

  • Following my representations, Enfield Council admitted that my constituent’s property isn’t suitable for her and her family. The Council will now conduct a full housing assessment.

Friday 23th June

  • This week I received almost 200 emails from constituents.

  • My constituent was issued with a back payment of more than £4,000 for childcare costs and her claim was reinstated after it had been wrongly suspended by the DWP.
