Monday 24th April

  • I attended a meeting of the Labour Party’s Race Equality Act Taskforce, where we discussed our plans for racial equality when we hopefully soon enter Government.
  • Later, I voted in support of amendments to increase accountability of the police when using new authoritarian stop and search powers to clamp down on protests. The Conservatives defeated this amendment

Tuesday 25th April

  • I was delighted to see a thank you email from a constituent I helped at the start of the pandemic, while they were homeless. They’ve now moved away from Edmonton but I was delighted to hear they now had a stable home and a rewarding job.
  • Responded to constituents concerned about the situation in Sudan, urging them to signpost anyone affected they knew towards the Foreign Office’s registration form – https://www.register.service.csd.fcdo.gov.uk/sudan-20230422/register-your-presence-in-sudan-with-fcdo
  • I was very happy to be contacted by year 5 pupils at Fleecefield Primary concerned about the problem of plastic pollution. I replied to them all and wrote to the Environment Secretary raising their concerns.

Wednesday 26th April

  • Looked over local issues being raised with someone being evicted by their landlord through no-fault of their own, and another concerned about anti-social behaviour.
  • I was also at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg as part of the UK delegation. I spoke in a debate about responding to natural disasters. I drew attention to the earthquakes in Turkey and how we should have done more to help those affected to travel here.

Thursday 27th April

  • I replied to a number of constituents concerned about a variety of policy issues, from the debt crisis facing low-income countries to illegal fox hunting in the UK.
  • Signed an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling for ‘no fault evictions’ to be banned immediately.
  • I also wrote my weekly update, about the issues of the week, available to read on my website.

Friday 28th April

  • I was delighted to hear that a constituent I referred for financial support, after their young son’s bed was broken, has been given a charitable grant.
